An elementary school case study

Percent of 5th Grade students meeting standard at the SBA math and English tests as a function of the percent of low-income students at each public school in Washington state. McDonald Elementary School is highlighted in orange.
The same plot as above, but with John Stanford International School highlighted in orange.
Percent of 5th Grade students meeting standard at the SBA math and English tests as a function of time.
SBA scores segmented by student cohort, where the “Cohort Year” is defined as the year that the class was in the 3rd grade.
2018–19 5th grade SBA test scores for several demographic groups at McDonald International School.
  1. The careful selection of a relevant benchmark school allowed us to rule out some potential barriers to student performance.
  2. We were able to see clear differences in grade/subject performance, likely impacted by individual teachers.
  3. We were able to identify specific student subgroups with significant outcome gaps; it seems feasible to build targeted interventions around them.
